  3. Equipment Required:
  4.  
  5.    IBM PC/AT and compatables with EGA(640x350), VGA(640x480) video,
  6.    at least 1 Hard disk, Mouse Systems or Microsoft compatable mouse
  7.    and at least 512k of memory.
  8.  
  9. Install Notes:
  10.  
  11.    If you downloaded McShell from a BBS:
  12.  
  13.       Create a directory called "MCSHELL".
  14.       
  15.       Un-Arc the demo into that directory.
  16.       
  17.       Copy the file "CONSOLE.SYS" to the root directory of
  18.       your boot drive.
  19.       
  20.       Include the command "DEVICE=CONSOLE.SYS" in your config.sys
  21.       file.
  22.  
  23.       Include the command "LASTDRIVE=D" in your config.sys file.
  24.       ** Where "D" is the last logical drive in your system ** 
  25.       
  26.       Restart your system.
  27.  
  28.       Change to the "MCSHELL" directory and type "GO".
  29.  
  30.    If you have a PROGRAM DISK:
  31.  
  32.    Insert the disk into the A: drive. Type A: and press
  33.    <ENTER>. If the drive is not A:, type B: and press <ENTER>.
  34.    When the DOS Prompt appears, type INSTALL C: and press 
  35.    <ENTER>. If you wish to install on another drive use that 
  36.    designation instead of C:.
  37.  
  38.    The install program modifys the autoexec.bat and config.sys
  39.    files on your boot drive.  If you do not wish to have these 
  40.    files modified, You can manually install the demo by typing 
  41.    the following:
  42.  
  43.    MKDIR C:\MCSHELL
  44.    COPY A:\MCSHELL\*.* C:\MCSHELL
  45.    COPY A:\CONSOLE.SYS C:\
  46.    
  47.    Include the following in your config.sys file:
  48.    DEVICE=C:\CONSOLE.SYS     <SEE NOTE BELOW!!!>
  49.                                
  50.    NOTE:  For McShell to communicate properly with your system, this 
  51.           statment MUST! be included in your config.sys file.

  56.    If you just got a copy of the demo directory from someone's
  57.    hard drive:
  58.  
  59.    Be sure you got the file "console.sys"
  60.    Before running McShell delete the files mcs.cfg and mcs.def!
  61.    These files contain the configuration of the system that McShell
  62.    was last installed on and may not match yours!  If you do not
  63.    delete these files before running McShell it may crash or print
  64.    garbage on your screen!

  71. Editor Notes:

  73.    You can use the editor of your choice and select the file to edit
  74.    from within McShell. You must set this up.  To do so create a file
  75.    named EDIT.BAT, and include the following statement in it:

  77.    EDLIN %1

  79.    Where EDLIN is the name of your editor. 
  80.    
  81.    NOTE: Be sure that a path to the subdirectory where your editor resides 
  82.    is defined in your autoexec.bat file or declare it in the edit.bat 
  83.    file you are creating.

  85.    If you have DOS 5.0 the demo ASSUMES the default editor named EDIT.EXE
  86.    is in the directory C:\DOS.  If the editor is in a different directory
  87.    follow the steps above declaring the path to the editor.

  156. Associating files:
  157.  
  158.    You can associate a file with the program that uses it if the program
  159.    accepts command line input.  To set this up select "Associate File"
  160.    from the "File" menu, Enter the name of the program file in the 1st.
  161.    Prompt box, press <TAB>, Enter the extension, (including the".") in
  162.    the second prompt box.  Select the <Ok> button.  The next time you 
  163.    double-click on a file with that extension, it will launch the 
  164.    associated program placing that file in it's work area.
  165.  
  166.    NOTE:  The path to the program must be included in the "path" statement
  167.    in your autoexec.bat file if the program you are associating with
  168.    is not in the same directory as the file you are clicking on.
  169.  
  170.    EXAMPLE:

  172.       Program:  edit.com   <-- Program file name.
  173.       Extension:  .txt     <-- work file extension 
  174.  
  175.    EXAMPLE:  (To run MS Windows Terminal prg. with a .trm file)

  182.    McShell uses an ascii file named "mcs.acc" to store the file
  183.    association data.  You can edit that file and enter the data directly 
  184.    if you use the following format:

  187.    program name     <-- Path to this must be declared in autoexec.bat
  188.    .ext

  193. Defining a Desktop Icon:
  194.  
  195.    Select "Define Desktop Icon" from the "Desktop" menu. Enter the full
  196.    path to the directory where the program file resides in the 1st. prompt
  197.    box,(don't include the name of the program file).  Press <TAB>. Enter  
  198.    the name of the program file in the 2nd. prompt box. Press <TAB>.
  199.    Enter the name of the icon file listed above that best suites the 
  200.    program in the 3rd. prompt box. Press <TAB>.  Enter the text that 
  201.    will describe to you, the function of the icon, (usually the product 
  202.    name of the software package) in the last prompt box.  Press <ENTER> 
  203.    twice.  The Icon will appear in the top right corner of the desktop.
  204.    Just grab it with the mouse and drag it where ever you want.
  205.  
  206. Adding more Desktop Icons:
  207.  
  208.    Select "Define Desktop Icon" from the "Desktop" menu.  Select the
  209.    <>Add radio button. Select <Ok> and repeat the above steps.

  211. Editing a Desktop Icon:
  212.  
  213.    Select "Define Desktop Icon" from the "Desktop" menu.  Select the
  214.    desired item from the list box. Select the <>Edit radio button. 
  215.    Select <Ok> and repeat the above steps.

  217. Deleting a Desktop Icon:
  218.  
  219.    Select "Define Desktop Icon" from the "Desktop" menu.  Select the
  220.    desired item from the list box. Select the <>Delete radio button 
  221.    and Select <Ok>.

  225.       Path:       c:\wp50   <-- Directory where program resides.

  237.    Once an icon is defined, just double click on it to run the 
  238.    application.

  241. Files and Directories:
  242.  
  243.    Directories are represented by windows on the desktop.  Each window 
  244.    IS! a directory.  It contains a series of icons representing each
  245.    file in that directory.  It also contains Icons that represent 
  246.    sub-directories.  You can view files, launch applications, and open  
  247.    windows to other subdirectories by double-clicking on an icon.

  251. Copying directories and files:
  252.  
  253.    There are two ways to copy a directory or a file.  One using the menu
  254.    system and entering the information in a dialog box.  The other more
  255.    productive is with the mouse.  The method using the mouse will be   
  256.    discussed here.   
  257.  
  258.       First, open a window to the directory where the file or files you
  259.    wish to copy reside,(the source window).  Then open a window to the 
  260.    directory where you want to copy the files to,(the destination window).
  261.    Move the mouse pointer to the source window and click.  Move the mouse
  262.    pointer over the file or folder you wish to copy, press the left mouse 
  263.    button, and hold it down while moving the pointer into the destination 
  264.    window.  When you release the button, the object will be copied and the
  265.    destination window updated to reflect the changes.
